Monday June 18th


 

1. Portrait Studio at Mars Cafe in the East Village 4:00PM - 5:30PM

Held during the opening reception of Rob Stephens' exhibit. Portrait Studio is a traveling art experience designed to bring unique art by real artists to communities and organizations. Our first studio was in 2013 in Grinnell, IA and since then we've continued to grow and employ the best portrait artists that Des Moines has to offer. 2. Rob Stephens Art show at Mars Cafe in the East Village 4:00PM - 5:30PM

What better way to fire up the Des Moines art week than enjoying the art of Rob Stephens in the fashion forward East Village.  Paintings, Wood Cuts ,Drawings and Comics so hot your eye balls will blister. You won’t likely see this kind of art at your grand papys Art Center ! Coffee Baristas have been briefed to set their coffee pots to scorching!  Portraits will be drawn on demand at the opening via The Portrait Studio. 3. Palms & trees… Somewhere - Olson-Larsen Galleries Annex - Valley Junction 5:30PM to 6:30PM

 
"Palms and trees…Somewhere” is a film photography pop-up exhibition from the French photographer Tatiana Giacinti. Through the window of the Ol Guild building, the curious visitors will glimpse a bounty of evergreen photos captured throughout various travels here and there in the world. From a city landscape in Italy to the Arizona desert, the succulent and pine trees show-off with their outstanding foliage. As a real obsession for the palms and trees, Tatiana will transform the Ol Guild building as an odd greenhouse where real plants will thrill among the shiny framed prints. This exhibition is happening simultaneously during Olson-Larsen annual landscape show. The exhibition can be appreciated from the outside of the glass building. Kid friendly. 4. Des Moines City Ride East Side Mural Tour - 5:30PM - 8:30PM

Join Des Moines City Ride for a bicycle tour of the East Side Murals and learn more about the project and the artists behind them.  Meet at Third Space DSM (1707 E. Grand Avenue) at 5:30pm to screen print your own bike themed t-shirt with The Side Garage before the ride! Ride leaves at 6:30pm.

5. Olson-Larsen Galleries - Annual Landscape Show

Olson-Larsen Galleries presents their Annual Landscape Show from June 15 to July 21, with an opening reception Friday, June 15 from 5-7 pm. Join us Friday for drinks and refreshments while enjoying work by gallery artists Stuart Klipper and Barbara Fedeler, joined by guest artists, Jean Gumpper and Jenny Kruger. Feast your eyes on a wide array of landscapes depicted through photography, drawing, prints, and paintings! Monday- Thursday the show will be open during normal gallery hours.

6. Des Moines Artist Studio Visits #1 - Christoper Chiavetta & Rob Stephens 6:00PM - 9:00PM

7. Plein Air Painting event with the Des Moines Social Club 6:00PM - 8:00PM

Use your creative skills to paint a canvas to be displayed at the Des Moines Social Club. You pick up your canvas on Friday June 15th and have the weekend to paint a scene in the Des Moines area. All of the completed works will be displayed in the show Monday June 18th in the Viaduct Gallery. Note: There will be a small supply fee for participation. Additional Details to be announced. 8. Riverview Artist Salon 12 - The Basement DM Social Club -  M I L I E U  7:00PM - 9:00PM

Monday, June 18th, 7p-9p What makes Des Moines, and Iowa interesting is its “milieu,” its culture, festivals, art and music. Riverview Artist Salon is proud to host an Art Week Des Moines 2018 celebration of art and music, bringing together individuals from our creative communities who devote a large part of their lives to pursing and supporting our M I L I E U.

Please join Author, John Domini, Vice President and Gallery Coordinator of the non-profit, FACE of Mahaska County, Matt Kargol, Artist, Co-Owner of Portrait Studio, and Manager of Central Iowa’s Art Beacon, Rachel, Buse, Musician, Molly Brandt and Pop-Up Show Artists for an evening of spoken word, information, insight and inspiration.

RAS is a grassroots, privately funded and member driven Closed Facebook Group of over 200 Iowa Creatives from all disciplines. Salon events are free, open to the public and provide members with an opportunity to share their words sounds, passions and works, as well as socialize and network with other members, their people, and the public.

9. Performance Art + Open Mic - Art Terrarium 7:00PM - 9:00PM

Special guest Performance Artists Serena Fath and Mary Cat Lawler will be kicking off this event exhibiting their creative expression followed by a Q&A with both artists. This is also an Open Mic event. Bring your open mind, curiosity and creativity to this event. We want to experience what the creative community has to share! We would say this event is kid friendly, but discretion should be advised.

Tuesday June 19th


 

1. Rock the Des Moines Arts Festival Rock Painting Event 1:00PM - 8:00PM

Hosted by Five Monkeys Inc. 4211 Chamberlian Ave Des Moines.  Stop in any time between 1p-8pm to paint a couple rocks to be shared with the world as you visit the Des Moines Art Festival.  There is a national kindness movement that involves painting, hiding and finding rocks.  Find more information on the Facebook Event Page

2. Moxie Gallery Features Iowa Artists in the East Village 5:00PM - 8:00PM

Join us at Moxie Gallery for an evening featuring Iowa Artists! Holly Vandeberg, Jeff Rider, James Osborn, Shelly Berkowitz, Patricia Davis, Hele Spivack , Jeff Klisares and Courtney Work will show original works from 5-8 to celebrate The Des Moines Arts Festival! See you in the East Village! 

3. Sculptures and Sips 5:00PM - 7:00PM

4. Art Week Workshops at Art Terrarium: DIY Painted Planters - 6:00PM

Artist Tia Rodemeyer is back for an Art Week DIY Painted Planters Workshop talking about color selection and simple techniques to achieve maximum DIY goodness.  For more information, click here.

5. Fitch Building Open House 6:00PM - 9:00PM

6. Hoyt Sherman Place Open House 6:00PM - 9:00PM

Tour the historic mansion, theater and art galleries while enjoying light refreshments and listening to classically trained pianist and singer-songwriter Krista Haugland. Krista Haugland’s influences range from George Winston and Bruce Hornsby to Bonnie Raitt and Eva Cassidy.  She released her record “Under It” in 2013 and continues to record and perform locally as a solo artist and with bands that include The Heath Alan Band, Stark Raving Madge, Jah-Blues, Julius Leisure and SP3. 7. Participatory Walk Through the Pappajohn Scultpure Park 6:00PM - 7:30PM

Designed and led by Art Center staff: Mia Farrell and Kara Fedje. Sometimes to really see, we need new ways for looking and this guided experience of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park offers just that. Wednesday June 20th


1. Baby + Me Drop-In Tour - Pappajohn Scultpure Park 11:00AM - 12Noon

Meet at Jaume Plensa's Nomade on Locust Street.  Adults are encouraged to bring their infants (pre-walkers) to an informal tour led by an Art Center docent. While conversation is geared for adults, babies love the visual stimulation of artwork. Check event details on the Des Moines Art Center Website

2. Stories, Relationships & Magic: How to Connect with Your Audience 5:00PM

Chris Dahlquist, visual artist and arts & business strategist, will share techniques she has discovered in her own practice as well as more than ten years of delivering professional development programming to other artists. Through discussion and interactive exercises, you will create the building blocks necessary to communicate your story in a variety of circumstances. This workshop is appropriate for any stage of your artistic career and all artistic disciplines.

3. War Paint with Des Moines Social Club and Proof Restaurant 5:30PM - 9:30PM

DMSC's classic bracket-style drawing competition is back, this year at Proof Restaurant. Artists will be given a 1'x1' white board, black marker, and 20 minutes to create their piece inspired by a different category each round. An audience vote will determine which artists move on to the next round. In the final head-to-head round, both artists will have 1 hour, their choice of markers, and a 2'x2' white board to create their masterpiece. At the end of the night, we'll crown the 2018 War Paint Champion!

This event is free to spectators, and open to all ages. Artists who wish to compete must register ($7 early-bird, $10 day-of).

4. Des Moines Artist Studio Visits #3 - Molly Spain 6:00PM - 9:00PM

5.Betsy Hart's Cerebral Terrain - 7:00PM - 10:00PM

If you missed the opening reception on June 1st, visit Betsy Hart's paintings at The Lift during Wednesday Martini Night. Betsy is exhibiting work created during her time as the 2017-2018 recipient of the Mainframe Studios Drake Alumni Artist Residency. Using latex house paint, she references the innermost complexities and intricacies that guide the inner self.

Thursday June 21st


1. Amy Putney Koenig In-Progress Mural in Valley Junction 3:00PM - 7:00PM

Visit Amy Putney Koenig while she's painting at Big Acai Bowl in Vallery Juncation at 117 5th st. In walking distance to Olson Larsen Galleries's Landscape Show and Jen Leatherby's immersive installation at OL Guild. 

2. Sticks Art Opening and Trunk Show 5:00PM - 8:00PM

Sticks staff artists will be sharing their personal paintings, photography and sculpture work. Also showcased will be one of our favorite handcrafted jewelry lines from Chicago, Nakamol. A large assortment of Nakamol earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets will be available, prices range from $15-$175. Come have some wine and appetizers while you shop, and enjoy amazing works by the artists of Des Moines' most recognized brand of handmade furniture and accessories. 3. RDG Dahlquist Art Studio Tour 5:30PM - 7:30PM

Hear from the Public Artist team of David Dahlquist and Matt Niebuhr and get a behind the scenes look at the RDG Dahlquist art studio facility. The first 30 minutes of the event will include networking with small bites and refreshments,  the next 30 minutes -- a walking tour, and finally, a presentation from David and Matt with time for questions and answers about Public Art. The studio is located at 512 Elm St, Des Moines, IA 50309.

4. Artist Workshop with Art Noir: Sally Linville of The City Girl Farm - 5:30PM - 7:30PM

Join Art Noir for a meet-and-greet with Des Moines Arts Festival artist Sally Linville, Creative Director of The City Girl Farm based in Kansas City.  Sally's "sophisticated barnyard" felted chicken footstools are one-of-a-kind pieces made of natural materials - fiber, wood, and bronze - created to bring delight and wonder into the world.  See the chickens, meet Sally, and learn about her creative process.  We'll have a simple art activity planned so you can tap into your creative side.  More exciting location details will be revealed to the registrants.  Participation is capped since it is at a private home so please RSVP right away through our Facebook event page to secure your spot! 5. Art Week Workshops at Art Terrarium: Floral Adornments and Rituals for the Summer Solstice - 6:00PM

Learn the basics of putting together small scale floral arrangements while creating boutonnieres and flower wands.  Enjoy a special solstice treat from Dust Bowl Bakery. Sip komboucha and join us in a short goal setting ritual.  For more information, click here.

6. Bruised Birds, Empty Nests, an immersive installation by Jen Leatherby - 6:00PM - 8:00PM

Leatherby's work attempts to express her feminine and human experience. Through the use of multi-sensory, immersive installations and interactions, she asks the viewer to ponder women’s rights, freedom, and oppression. Leatherby incorporates found and everyday objects for installation and sculpture in addition to using sound, performance, painting and sewing. Facebook Event

7. Feminist Fuel - Des Moines Art Center - 6:00PM - 8:00PM

We know that fighting the patriarchy is exhausting. Stop by the Art Center for a fun, feminist-focused evening that's sure to reinvigorate you. Screen print a T-shirt or tote bag featuring exclusive designs created for the exhibition In the Spirit of Louise Noun with our friends at The Side Garage. Grab some fuel for the resistance from the cash bar that will be serving up signature coffee cocktails. 9. Urban Visionaries Show at the Des Moines Social Club - 6:30PM - 10:30PM

The Urban Visionaries show focuses on urban artists from around the world. Artists Retna, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, FAILE, and Martin Whatson will be shown in the Viaduct Gallery. The opening night will feature, music, drinks, and lots of great art.

Friday June 22nd


1. Des Moines Arts Festival Opens! 11:00AM - 10:00PM

The eleven-time Grand Pinnacle Award-winning Des Moines Arts Festival, presented by Nationwide, is being held June 22-24, 2018. This free annual three-day arts and culture festival will surround the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. DMAF invites you to “…go where it takes you…” by engaging with 180 invited professional visual artists, emerging Iowa artists, the cutting-edge Interrobang Film Festival, live music, performing arts, interactive arts activities, award-winning community outreach programs, live artist workshops and demonstrations, artisan food, and beverages for every taste. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy, so mark your calendars! 2. Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity Wall Raising Ceremony - 11:00AM

Join us at 12th Street and Locust Street as the Des Moines Arts Festival once again partners with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a family in need. This short program is the start of a three-day Blitz Build on the Festival site from June 22-24 in Western Gateway Park. Guests of the Festival will be able to tour the house from noon to 4:00pm on Sunday, June 24th upon completion.

3. Art Bus Unveiling - Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation 12:00PM

As a part of the 2018 Des Moines Arts Festival, DART and the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation are once again partnering to wrap a transit bus with an artist's design. The unveiling ceremony is Friday, June 22 at 12:00pm on 12th Street between Grand Avenue and Locust Street. In addition to the unveiling, DART and the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation are also hosting two public art tours on Saturday, June 24th. The tours, which will take place at 1:00pm and 3:00pm, are free and open to the public. The pick-up location for the tour is near the intersection of 12th Street and High Street in Downtown Des Moines. Volunteers will be on hand to assist those interested in taking the tour. Media is also welcome to ride along. Each tour is scheduled to last approximately one hour.

4. Interrobang Film Festival - 11:00AM - 10:00PM

The Interrobang Film Festival presented by AARP Movies for Grownups, is three days filled with films and communication between filmmakers and audience members. The audience, whether cinema enthusiasts or curious newcomers, can experience curated screenings of 55 films form 30 different countries. Films are screened Friday, June 22nd - Sunday, June 24th in the South wing of the Des Moines Public Library located on the Des Moines Arts Festival site.

Part juried competition, part public screening and part workshop, the unique film festival event allows people to experience films from artists around the globe. The term "interrobang" indicates a non-standard punctuation mark in an exclamatory manner, as in, "What are YOU doing for Art Week 2018?!" This mixture of query and interjection leaves room for reflection, contemplation and exploration. Since 2007, the Des Moines Arts Festival has presented the INterrobang Film Festival as part of its three-day lineup bringing the art of the film to Festival guests June 22-24th.  For a complete list and schedule of the films in this year's festival, please click here.

5. Barnum Factory Mural Unveiling 4:00PM - 6:00PM

Rebel and Outsider artists alike have been working diligently as a team on a mural on the second floor of the Barnum Factory.
Collaborative artists include Cazzie Hammond, Iven Jones, Shannantay Lewis, Andy Donald, Desa Irene and others. Come celebrate its completion with us! There will be refreshments and good times to be had.

6. Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, P.C. attorneys Open House 4:30PM - 6:30PM

Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, P.C. attorneys have long been proud patrons of the arts in the community through their patronage efforts of various organizations, and service on arts organization boards over the years. In 2013, we launched Iowa Artists on Display to give Iowa artists another opportunity to showcase their works at our downtown Des Moines headquarters. Now in its sixth year, the program has become an exciting part of the vibrant, growing Des Moines art scene. Drinks and appetizers will be served while you admire the works of art professors and students from colleges and universities throughout the state of Iowa. 8. Organ Concert & Art Show at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral 6:30PM - 8:30PM

Join us for a festive evening of music and art! Central College professor and organist Mark A. Babcock will play selections on the renowned Casavant organ, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. After the performance, there will be a light reception and a chance to view the work of local artists on display throughout the Cathedral. Doors open at 6pm, Concert starts at 6:30pm. Saturday June 23rd


1. ArtFest Midwest - Varied Industries Building - Iowa State Fairgrounds 10:00AM - 6:00PM

Artfest Midwest, Iowa's largest fina art show, is an indoor event (with a few outdoor spaces) held in the rain-free, air-conditioned Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Approximately 250 artists will be participating in this 15th annual event. ArtFest Midwest will again offer free shuttle bus service to downtown. 2. Slo-Mo Parade 10:00AM

Join Laze artist Rachel Buse is a slow motion parade in Downtown Des Moines on Saturday June 23, meeting at 10 AM by the giant umbrella at Cowles Commons. Wear comfortable shows.  RSVP HERE 

3. Ember Market Art Fest

4. Interrobang Film Festival - 11:00AM - 10:00PM

The Interrobang Film Festival presented by AARP Movies for Grownups, is three days filled with films and communication between filmmakers and audience members. The audience, whether cinema enthusiasts or curious newcomers, can experience curated screenings of 55 films form 30 different countries. Films are screened Friday, June 22nd - Sunday, June 24th in the South wing of the Des Moines Public Library located on the Des Moines Arts Festival site.

Part juried competition, part public screening and part workshop, the unique film festival event allows people to experience films from artists around the globe. The term "interrobang" indicates a non-standard punctuation mark in an exclamatory manner, as in, "What are YOU doing for Art Week 2018?!" This mixture of query and interjection leaves room for reflection, contemplation and exploration. The eleven-time Grand Pinnacle Award-winning Des Moines Arts Festival, presented by Nationwide, is being held June 22-24, 2018. This free annual three-day arts and culture festival will surround the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. DMAF invites you to “…go where it takes you…” by engaging with 180 invited professional visual artists, emerging Iowa artists, the cutting-edge Interrobang Film Festival, live music, performing arts, interactive arts activities, award-winning community outreach programs, live artist workshops and demonstrations, artisan food, and beverages for every taste. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy, so mark your calendars! 6. Art Terrarium + Friends: A Local Art Pop Up Market 12:00PM - 5:00PM

As a nod to our OG Skywalk Pop Up + Art Terrarium we’re bringing in a group of local artists to take over our space Saturday June 23rd for Art Week 2018. They’ll be hustling their goods amongst plants and good vibes from 12-5pm.

We’ll be hosting makers and creators and creatives of an array of practices so make Art Terrarium a part of your weekend stops during the Des Moines Arts Festival. Our refreshing urban jungle will be the perfect oasis to come check out work ranging from artists who are emerging to working full time. Very good!

7. Trey Reis's Piece: A Study in Disrupting Old Patterns 12:00PM - 5:00PM

If you missed the opening reception on June 15th, visit Trey Reis's collages during the Art Terrarium's Local Art Pop Up. Trey Reis is a visual and sound artist working in Des Moines, IA since 2013. His work explores relationships between mid-20th century media forms, both printed and recorded, through processes of deconstruction and recontextualization. Take a peak at the work he'll be exhibiting.

Artfest Midwest, Iowa's largest fina art show, is an indoor event (with a few outdoor spaces) held in the rain-free, air-conditioned Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Approximately 250 artists will be participating in this 15th annual event. ArtFest Midwest will again offer free shuttle bus service to downtown. The Interrobang Film Festival presented by AARP Movies for Grownups, is three days filled with films and communication between filmmakers and audience members. The audience, whether cinema enthusiasts or curious newcomers, can experience curated screenings of 55 films form 30 different countries.
